- When you arrive at home, you will have stickers on your bandage that say “MOVE FINGERS” and “ELEVATE HAND". It is very important to elevate your hand so that your fingers are pointing toward the ceiling, not just on a pillow.
-
Take your pain medication as directed.
-
If needed, you may also take up to 2400mg of Ibuprofen in 24 hrs.
-
After 3 days, remove the bandage. You can unwrap it or have someone help you. Remove ALL of the bandage and gauze. Wash your hands with soap and water. Dry the area of the incision well. Make sure it is completely dry.
-
Apply a band-aid over the incision.
-
If you shower or wash your hands, apply a new band-aid after completely drying the incision area.
-
Apply the splint you were given at your pre-op appointment. (If you already had one, use the splint you have). If you do not have one, any splint purchased at a drugstore may be used. Remove the splint to shower.
-
You may use your fingers as tolerated. If something causes discomfort, don’t do it.
